Alone

The ramp meter on the highway was turned on for rush hour. A pause—ten seconds—then I accelerated to match the flow of traffic. Merging onto the highway I saw six empty lanes. A peek in the rearview revealed nobody approaching from behind. I imagined an accident, construction, a police blockade, then pressed on the gas.
